About Signal Charlie

The Charlie signal flag is the international signal for Yes or Affirmative. It is the signal given aboard US Navy vessels that it is clear to land, hence the term "Signal Charlie."


This endeavor is dedicated to the continuous improvement of aerospace safety, through leadership development and knowledge exchange.

Who is Sigal Charlie: Kent Lewis is a retired Marine Corps Naval Aviator and combat veteran, he graduated the Naval Postgraduate School's Aviation Safety Officer's (ASO) course with Honors in 1995. During his Marine Corps' career he flew both fixed wing and rotary wing aircraft, and was an Instructor Pilot in the UH-1N and Standardization Instructor in the T-34C. As ASO, Safety Department Head and Director of Safety & Standardization the unit's programs were recognized 4 consecutive times with the Chief of Naval Operations Safety "S" Award as well as the Operational Excellence "E". During his last Marine Corps tour as Command SAR Officer the unit was recognized as the Navy's SAR Unit of the Year.

He has attended the Air Line Pilots Association's (ALPA) Accident Investigation (AI) courses 1, 2 and 3 and instructed the Human Factors Module for AI-2. Kent has an Airline Transport Pilot rating, along with CFI, CFII and MEI and is also a Commercial rated helicopter pilot and Flight Engineer. Since 2003 Kent has volunteered with the FAA Safety Team (FAASTeam) and in 2009 he was selected as the National FAASTeam Representative of the Year.


Kent has been employed as an Airline Transport Pilot since 1999, having flown the ATR-42, ATR-72(212A), B-717, B-727, B-737, MD-88, MD-90 and is Type Rated in  B777 and DC-9. He is currently a Captain at Delta Air Lines.

Prior aircraft flown in the Marine Corps were the UH-1N (Bell 212), T-34C and UC-12B (KingAir 200).
